Kénmentesítés refers to processes that remove sulfur compounds from materials, primarily fuels and industrial feedstocks. This is crucial for environmental protection and to prevent damage to equipment. Sulfur in fuels, when burned, produces sulfur dioxide (SO2), a major air pollutant contributing to acid rain and respiratory problems. In industrial processes, sulfur can poison catalysts, lead to corrosion, and degrade product quality.

Several methods are employed for kénmentesítés. Hydrodesulfurization (HDS) is a widely used catalytic process in oil refineries. In HDS, hydrogen is reacted with sulfur-containing organic compounds in the presence of a catalyst, typically molybdenum or cobalt oxides on alumina. This converts the organic sulfur compounds into hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is then removed and often processed into elemental sulfur. Another approach is oxidative desulfurization, where sulfur compounds are oxidized to more easily removable species. Physical methods, such as adsorption using activated carbon or zeolites, can also be used to selectively remove sulfur compounds. The choice of method depends on the type of feedstock, the concentration of sulfur, and the desired level of purity.
