Käännösmuisti, known in English as a translation memory, is a technology used in computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools. It is a database that stores previously translated segments of text, typically sentences or paragraphs, along with their original source language counterparts. When a translator works on a new document, the translation memory system analyzes the source text and searches for matching or similar segments in its database.

If a precise match is found, the previously translated segment is presented to the translator for approval or modification. This significantly speeds up the translation process as the translator does not need to retranslate identical or very similar phrases. For partial matches, the system may suggest portions of the previously translated text, requiring the translator to fill in the differences.

Translation memories are crucial for maintaining consistency in terminology and style across large or ongoing translation projects. They are particularly beneficial for repetitive texts, such as technical manuals, software interfaces, and legal documents, where similar phrases or sentences appear frequently.
