Käyttäisikään

Käyttäisikään is a Finnish verb form derived from the verb käyttää, meaning to use. It is the present conditional form käyttisi with the enclitic particle -kin added for emphasis. The combination creates a nuance of hypotheticity or wish, and the meaning can be translated roughly as would even use or if only someone would use.

Form and formation. The base for this form is the conditional singular of käyttää, käyttäisi. The enclitic -kin attaches to the whole form to add emphasis or contrast, producing kävittäisikään. This construction is most common in written Finnish and in careful spoken Finnish when the speaker wants to stress that using something would be desirable or surprising.

Usage. Käyttäisikään is used in clauses expressing wish, hypotheticality, or contrast. It often appears in sentences that translate to “If only he would use it,” “Would even he use it,” or “If he would use it, (then) …” It can occur after conjunctions like jos (“if”) or in exclamatory or rhetorical contexts. The emphasis conveyed by -kin adds a tone of longing, expectation, or reproach.

- Jos hän käyttäisikään sitä keinoa, tilanne paranisi. (If only he would use that method, the situation would improve.)

- Käyttäisikään hänkin tätä ohjetta. (If only he would use this guideline as well.)

Notes. Käyttäisikään is distinct from the plain conditional muodot kuten käyttäisi, which states a straightforward hypothetical. The -kin particle shifts the mood toward emphasis or wish.
