Käsivaihteistot, often referred to as manual transmissions, are a type of gearbox used in vehicles where the driver manually selects the gear ratio. This is achieved through a clutch pedal and a gear lever. When the driver presses the clutch pedal, it disengages the engine from the transmission, allowing for a gear change. The gear lever is then used to move internal components within the gearbox to select the desired gear. Releasing the clutch pedal re-engages the engine, transferring power to the wheels at the selected ratio.
