Káliumszulfit

Káliumszulfit is the potassium salt of sulfurous acid with the chemical formula K2SO3. It appears as a white crystalline solid and is soluble in water. Káliumszulfit is often produced by the reaction of potassium carbonate with sulfur dioxide.

Historically, sulfites, including potassium sulfite, have been used as preservatives in food and wine. They act as antioxidants, preventing spoilage by inhibiting the growth of bacteria and molds, and also prevent browning in certain foods. However, due to potential allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, its use in food is regulated and must be declared on product labels in many regions.

In industrial applications, káliumszulfit can be used in photography, as a reducing agent, and in the manufacturing of dyes. It can also be a component in some fire extinguishing agents. Its chemical properties allow it to participate in various redox reactions. While generally considered stable under normal conditions, it can decompose when heated strongly, releasing sulfur oxides. When dissolved in water, it forms an alkaline solution due to hydrolysis.
