Kytkentäinduktanssi, also known as mutual inductance, is a concept in electromagnetism that describes the phenomenon where a changing current in one coil induces a voltage in a nearby coil. This induction occurs due to the magnetic field produced by the first coil. When the magnetic flux from this field passes through a second coil, any change in the flux over time will generate an electromotive force (EMF), or voltage, in that second coil.

The magnitude of this induced voltage is directly proportional to the rate of change of current in the first coil and the coupling between the two coils. This coupling is quantified by the coefficient of mutual inductance, denoted by the symbol M. The unit of mutual inductance is the Henry (H), the same as self-inductance.

Mutual inductance is a reciprocal property; the voltage induced in coil 2 due to a changing current in coil 1 is the same as the voltage induced in coil 1 due to an equal rate of change of current in coil 2. This phenomenon is fundamental to the operation of transformers, where it allows for the transfer of electrical energy between circuits through magnetic coupling, enabling voltage transformations. It also plays a role in various other electrical and electronic devices, including inductors with multiple windings and some types of sensors. The degree of coupling, and thus the mutual inductance, depends on the geometry of the coils, their relative positions, and the magnetic properties of the medium between them.
