Kystvakten

Kystvakten, commonly referred to as the Norwegian Coast Guard, is the maritime security service of Norway and a component of the Royal Norwegian Navy. Its principal responsibility is the surveillance, control, and enforcement of laws in Norwegian coastal waters, including the territorial sea and the exclusive economic zone. The unit works to prevent and respond to threats such as illegal fishing, smuggling, and pollution, and to assist civil authorities in search and rescue operations, maritime safety, and environmental protection.

Operationally, Kystvakten conducts patrols with surface vessels and aircraft, maintains fisheries inspection and enforcement, and coordinates with other agencies such as the Norwegian Police Service, the Directorate of Fisheries, and civil maritime authorities. It also collaborates with international partners for border control, anti-smuggling efforts, and disaster response.

Organization and command: Kystvakten is part of the Royal Norwegian Navy and is tasked with maintaining a visible presence along Norway’s coast, including key trade routes and sensitive areas in the Arctic and Barents Sea when required. Assets typically include patrol ships and surveillance aircraft, supported by logistics and command structures that enable rapid response to incidents.

History: The concept of a professional coast guard in Norway has developed since the mid-20th century, with the Kystvakten functioning as a dedicated coast guard within the navy in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The force has undergone modernization programs to enhance patrol capabilities and interoperability with civilian authorities.
