Kynäkovuustestiä, often referred to as a pencil hardness test, is a method used to assess the scratch resistance of a coating or surface. This test involves applying a specific type of pencil to the surface at a consistent angle and pressure, and then observing if the pencil tip scratches, gouges, or abrades the material.

The test utilizes a standardized set of pencils ranging in hardness from soft (e.g., 6B) to very hard (e.g., 9H). Each pencil is sharpened to a precise point to ensure consistent contact area. The operator draws a line across the surface with each pencil, starting from the softest and progressing to the hardest. The hardness of the surface is then defined by the hardest pencil that does not cause any visible damage.
