Kynsisairaudet, often referred to as nail diseases, encompass a range of conditions that affect the nails of the fingers and toes. These ailments can manifest in various ways, including changes in nail color, thickness, shape, and texture. Common causes include fungal infections, bacterial infections, trauma, and underlying systemic diseases.

Fungal infections, particularly those caused by dermatophytes, are the most prevalent cause of kynsisairaudet. They typically lead to thickening, discoloration (often yellow or brown), and brittleness of the nail. Bacterial infections can cause inflammation, pus formation, and pain around the nail. Trauma, such as stubbing a toe or repeated pressure on the nail, can lead to bruising, splitting, or nail loss. Certain medical conditions, like psoriasis, eczema, thyroid disorders, and circulatory problems, can also impact nail health, leading to abnormal growth or appearance.

Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination and sometimes a laboratory test, such as a nail scraping, to identify the causative agent. Treatment strategies vary depending on the cause and severity of the condition. For fungal infections, topical or oral antifungal medications are commonly prescribed. Bacterial infections may require antibiotics. In cases of trauma or severe deformity, medical intervention might be necessary. Prevention often involves good hygiene practices, keeping nails trimmed and clean, and avoiding tight footwear.
