Kylmälaatikot

Kylmälaatikot, a Finnish term translating to "cold boxes," refers to a category of insulated containers designed to maintain a low temperature for stored items, typically food and beverages. These containers are commonly used for picnics, camping trips, fishing excursions, and for transporting perishable goods. Their primary function is to delay the warming of contents, thereby preserving freshness and preventing spoilage.

The construction of a kylmälaatikko usually involves a double-walled shell made of plastic. The space between these walls is filled with an insulating material, such as polyurethane foam or expanded polystyrene (EPS). This insulation significantly reduces heat transfer from the warmer surroundings to the cooler interior. Many kylmälaatikot also feature a tight-fitting lid, often with a seal, to further enhance their thermal performance by minimizing air exchange.

To maximize the cooling effect, ice packs or frozen water bottles are typically placed inside the kylmälaatikko alongside the items being kept cool. These refrigerants absorb heat from the interior, maintaining a low temperature for an extended period. The duration of cooling depends on the size and quality of the kylmälaatikko, the amount of ice used, and external environmental conditions. They come in various sizes, from small personal coolers to large portable units capable of holding significant quantities.
