Kvartersstorlek

Kvartersstorlek refers to the characteristic size of a building or complex of buildings within a city block or quadrant in Scandinavian countries. The concept is often associated with urban planning and architecture.

Early 20th-century architects and town planners in Sweden and Norway drew upon the block system principles of late 19th-century Copenhagen. They made buildings of differing heights and ground plans that combine relatively small building groups with differently scaled neighborhoods. Kvartersstorlek embodies this approach, where street-oriented groupings were gradually superseded by less symmetrical sub-divisions of ground plans.

In a classic block system, each building typically stands on its own plot or with a long shared wall between buildings in different ownership. This principle may prevail with the demographic dynamics of entire districts. Kvartersstorlek combines "cells" within these larger area workings.
