Another related concept is quantum cryptography, which utilizes the principles of quantum mechanics to perform cryptographic tasks. The most prominent example is quantum key distribution (QKD). QKD protocols, such as BB84, allow two parties to generate and share a secret cryptographic key with a level of security guaranteed by the laws of physics. Any attempt to eavesdrop on the key exchange will inevitably disturb the quantum states, alerting the legitimate users. While QKD offers strong security for key distribution, it is a distinct technology from PQC, which focuses on replacing current public-key algorithms with quantum-resistant ones for broader applications like digital signatures and encryption. The transition to quantum-resistant cryptographic systems is a significant undertaking that requires careful planning and implementation across various sectors.
