In digital signal processing and data representation, real-world analog signals or continuous data must be converted into a digital format. This process, known as quantization, involves mapping these continuous values to specific discrete numerical values.

The process of quantization inherently introduces an error, known as quantization error. This error arises because the discrete levels cannot perfectly represent every possible continuous value. The size of the quantization step, which is the difference between adjacent discrete levels, directly influences the magnitude of this error. Smaller quantization steps lead to finer resolution and reduced error, but require more discrete levels and thus more bits to represent each value.
