The phrase refers to the physical surface or substrate onto which an image is reproduced. This could be a glass plate, a metal plate, or more broadly, any medium that bears a photographic image before it is printed or displayed in its final form.

Historically, kuvalevylle was a critical component in the creation of photographic prints. In processes like daguerreotypes or tintypes, the image was directly formed on a metal plate, making the plate itself the final image carrier. In later processes, the negative, often on glass, served as the kuvalevylle from which prints were made. The term emphasizes the tangible nature of the photographic image at an intermediate stage.
