Kuututkimus

Kuututkimus, also known as lunar research or lunar science, encompasses the scientific study of Earth's Moon. This field has a long and rich history, dating back to early astronomical observations and intensifying with the advent of space exploration. The primary goals of kuututkimus are to understand the Moon's origin, its geological evolution, its internal structure, and its surface characteristics.

Early kuututkimus relied on telescopic observations, which revealed surface features like craters, mountains, and maria (dark, basaltic plains). The Apollo program, a series of human spaceflights to the Moon conducted by NASA between 1961 and 1972, marked a monumental leap in kuututkimus. Current research also focuses on understanding lunar resources, such as helium-3, which is a potential fuel for future fusion reactors, and on using the Moon as a platform for astronomical observations. The ongoing interest in kuututkimus is driven by scientific curiosity, the pursuit of resources, and the long-term goal of human presence beyond Earth.
