Kuumtöötlusega refers to a group of processes used in metallurgy and materials science to alter the physical and sometimes chemical properties of a material. These processes involve heating the material to specific temperatures and then cooling it in a controlled manner. The primary goal of heat treatment is to improve the material's strength, hardness, ductility, toughness, or other desirable characteristics.

Common heat treatment processes include annealing, which softens the material and improves its ductility by relieving internal stresses and refining its grain structure. Hardening, often achieved through quenching, involves heating a material to a high temperature and then rapidly cooling it to make it harder and stronger, though it can also reduce ductility. Tempering is a subsequent process to hardening, where the material is reheated to a lower temperature and cooled to reduce brittleness and increase toughness. Normalizing involves heating the material to a temperature above its critical point and then cooling it in still air, producing a more uniform and refined grain structure. Case hardening processes, like carburizing or nitriding, are used to harden the surface of a material while keeping the core relatively soft and tough. The specific temperature, time, and cooling rate are critical parameters that determine the outcome of the heat treatment.
