Kutuzov

Mikhail Illarionovich Kutuzov was a Russian general and field marshal. He is most famous for his role in the Patriotic War of 1812, where he successfully led the Russian forces against Napoleon Bonaparte's invading Grande Armée. Born in 1745, Kutuzov joined the army at a young age and participated in numerous campaigns, including those against the Ottoman Empire and in Poland. He distinguished himself with his tactical acumen and strategic foresight, earning a reputation for his calm demeanor and ability to inspire his troops.

During the 1812 invasion, Kutuzov was appointed commander-in-chief of the Russian army. While he initially retreated, he engaged Napoleon's forces at the Battle of Borodino, a costly but strategically significant engagement. Recognizing the unsustainable nature of the French occupation, Kutuzov adopted a strategy of attrition and harassment. He famously allowed the French to occupy Moscow, which was subsequently burned, further weakening Napoleon's army. As the Grande Armée retreated, Kutuzov relentlessly pursued them, inflicting heavy losses and ultimately contributing to the decisive defeat of Napoleon's invasion. His leadership during this period solidified his status as a national hero in Russia. Kutuzov died in 1813, shortly after the French withdrawal from Russia.
