In military usage, marshal refers to high-ranking officers. Field marshal is often the highest army rank in many traditional monarchies, while marshal of the air force denotes a five-star general in air forces. France has historically conferred the dignified title Maréchal de France; Germany used Generalfeldmarschall. Modern practice varies by country, with some nations retaining the term in ceremonial form.

In law enforcement and public administration, marshal denotes various roles. The United States has the U.S. Marshals Service, a federal agency responsible for fugitive operations, witness protection, and prisoner transport. Local jurisdictions may employ town marshals or court marshals with duties ranging from law enforcement to court security.

As a verb and in civilian use, to marshal means to assemble or organize people or resources for a purpose. A parade or event may have a marshal who coordinates participants; a military or logistical operation may marshal forces or assets.
