Kustantamon

Kustantamo is the Finnish term for a publishing house or publisher. The genitive form kustantamon is used in phrases such as kustantamon oikeudet (the publisher’s rights). In Finland and elsewhere, a kustantamo is a company responsible for the publication of literary and other written works, including books, magazines, journals, and increasingly digital content such as e-books and audiobooks.

Core activities include acquiring manuscripts or rights to works, editorial work (substantive editing and copyediting), production planning (design, layout, proofreading), and the actual production (printing for physical books or formatting for digital editions). A kustantamo also manages distribution, sales, and marketing, and handles licensing and rights management, including translations and foreign rights. It signs contracts with authors or agents and pays royalties according to negotiated terms.

Organization and brands: Publishers can be independent enterprises or part of larger media groups. Many use imprints or brands to distinguish genres or target audiences. Common departments include acquisitions, editorial, production, rights and licensing, marketing, and sales.
