Kuparisulfaattisuoloja

Kuparisulfaattisuoloja are chemical compounds that contain copper and sulfate ions. The most common and widely recognized form is copper(II) sulfate, with the chemical formula CuSO4. This compound typically exists as the pentahydrate, CuSO4·5H2O, which is a vibrant blue crystalline solid. This hydrated form is often referred to as bluestone or blue vitriol. Anhydrous copper(II) sulfate is a white powder and readily absorbs water, turning blue.

Copper sulfate is soluble in water, and its solutions are typically blue due to the presence of the [Cu(H2O)6]2+ ion. It is used in various applications, including agriculture as a fungicide and algaecide, in electroplating baths, as a mordant in dyeing, and in the preparation of other copper compounds. Historically, it has also found use in medicine as an astringent and emetic, though these uses are now less common due to toxicity concerns.

Other copper sulfate salts exist, such as copper(I) sulfate (Cu2SO4), which is a white solid that is less stable in the presence of oxygen and water. However, copper(II) sulfate and its hydrates are by far the most commercially significant and commonly encountered kuparisulfaattisuoloja. Care should be taken when handling copper sulfate as it can be toxic if ingested and is an irritant to skin and eyes.
