Kuorisuodatin

A kuorisuodatin, or bark filter, is a type of biofilter used in wastewater treatment. It utilizes a porous substrate, typically wood bark, to support the growth of microorganisms. These microorganisms, primarily bacteria and fungi, are responsible for breaking down organic pollutants present in the wastewater.

The process begins with wastewater flowing through the bark medium. As the water passes, organic matter adheres to the bark surface and is consumed by the biofilm of microorganisms. This biological degradation converts complex organic compounds into simpler substances like carbon dioxide, water, and mineral salts. The bark itself provides a large surface area for microbial colonization and also contributes to the physical removal of suspended solids.

Kuorisuodatin systems are often employed for treating domestic sewage and certain industrial wastewaters. They are known for their relatively simple construction and operation, as well as their ability to achieve significant reductions in biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The bark material is biodegradable and can eventually be composted or disposed of. Maintenance typically involves managing the flow rate and occasional removal of accumulated sludge. The effectiveness of a kuorisuodatin can be influenced by factors such as temperature, pH, and the type and concentration of pollutants in the wastewater.
