Kumppanitähtiä

Kumppanitähtiä is a Finnish term that translates to "partner star" or "companion star." It refers to a star that is gravitationally bound to another star, forming a binary star system. These systems are very common in the universe, with estimates suggesting that over half of all stars are part of a binary or multiple star system.

Binary star systems can vary greatly in their characteristics. The two stars can have similar masses or vastly different ones. Their orbits can be circular or highly elliptical, and the distance between them can range from incredibly close, where the stars may interact physically, to vast separations. The study of binary stars is crucial for understanding stellar evolution, as the gravitational interactions and mass transfer between stars can significantly influence their life cycles.

Observing binary stars allows astronomers to determine fundamental stellar properties such as mass, radius, and luminosity, which are often difficult to ascertain for single stars.
