Kumpares

Kumpares refers to the male principal sponsors or godfathers at a baptism or wedding in Filipino culture. The term originates from the Spanish word "compadre," meaning "co-father." Traditionally, kumpares are chosen by the parents of the child being baptized or the couple getting married, and they are expected to provide guidance, support, and a good example to the godchild or the newlyweds.

The role of a kumpares extends beyond the ceremony itself. They are considered part of the extended family and are often involved in important life events of their godchildren or the couple. This involvement can include offering financial assistance, advice, or simply being a trusted confidant. The selection of kumpares is a significant decision, as it signifies a deep bond and responsibility.

In some instances, particularly in rural areas, the relationship between the parents and the kumpares can become very close, forging strong familial ties. The concept of kumpares highlights the importance of community and extended family support within Filipino society. While the term specifically denotes male sponsors, the female equivalent is "kumadre." The reciprocal relationship between parents and sponsors is known as "compadrazgo."
