Kummirullikule

Kummirullikule is a small village located in the Haa District of Bhutan. The village has a population of approximately 100 residents, who primarily engage in subsistence farming and livestock rearing. Kummirullikule has historical significance as it was a major trading hub between Tibet and Bhutan prior to the closure of the border in the mid-20th century. The village still retains remnants of its trading past, including ancient pathways and makeshift markets. However, the closure of the border has led to a decline in economic activity, forcing many residents to seek employment in the capital towns of Thimphu and Punakha. As a result, the village has a relatively high degree of out-migration among its young population, contributing to an aging demographic. Alongside livestock, the principal crops grown in the area include wheat, barley, maize, and potatoes. These crops provide staple food to the locals and also meet a fraction of the regional demand.

A trip to Kummirullikule may be dotted with snatches of conversation between the villagers and visitors; locals often attribute this welcoming nature to the Buddhist culture that dominates Bhutanese society. Buddhism stays at the heart of the local way of life, here too a beautiful stands a Dzong in the heart of the village which symbolises that harmony is possible to achieve in spite of all the sociological and environmental backdrops in the village and many Bhutanese communities.
