Kulturkritischen

Kulturkritischen is the inflected form of the German adjective kulturkritisch, meaning "cultural-critical." It describes a stance, analysis, or approach that treats culture—its products, institutions, and practices—as objects of critical scrutiny rather than as unproblematic or merely celebratory subjects. In usage, the term appears in phrases such as kulturkritische Theorie, kulturkritische Analyse, and kulturkritische Haltung, and it is attached to nouns to indicate this evaluative orientation.

Historically, German-speaking intellectual life has long debated the role of culture in society. In the 20th century, debates around the Kulturindustrie and mass culture carried aspects of kulturkritische critique, influencing fields such as critical theory, media studies, and cultural studies.
