Kulmasulut

Kulmasulut, or angle valves, are a type of plumbing shut-off valve designed to control the flow of water to individual fixtures. They are installed at a 90-degree angle to the pipe, typically located under sinks, behind toilets, or near appliances, allowing a convenient shut-off without affecting the main supply.

Most kulmasulut are either compression-type, where a ferrule and nut seal against a copper or plastic pipe; or soldered (sweat) type, where the valve body is joined by solder. Push-fit variants also exist for quick installations. The valve itself is usually brass with a chrome or nickel finish, and employs a quarter-turn or multi-turn mechanism to open and close flow.

Common sizes vary, often described in inches (for example 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch connections), reflecting the inlet and outlet. When installing, ensure correct thread or connection type, use appropriate tape or sealant on threaded joints, and avoid overtightening compression fittings. For soldered types, proper heating and cooling are essential to avoid damage to pipes.

Maintenance and reliability considerations include leaks at connections, worn seals, or corrosion. If a kulmasulku leaks, replacing the valve is a common solution; for temporary fixes, tightening or replacing washers may help, but full replacement is often recommended for long-term reliability. Regular inspection and timely replacement help prevent water damage and ensure predictable shutoffs.
