Kudiyattam
Kudiyattam is a traditional performing art form from Kerala, India, recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. It is a Sanskrit theatrical tradition that has been preserved and passed down through generations within specific communities. The performance typically involves elaborate costumes, intricate facial expressions, and stylized movements. Kudiyattam performances are known for their long duration, often spanning several nights, and are based on classical Sanskrit plays, particularly those by the playwright Bhasa. The acting is highly codified, with specific gestures and vocalizations representing emotions and actions. The traditional performance space is the koothambalam, a specially constructed temple theatre. Music plays a significant role, with percussion instruments like the mizhavu and edakka accompanying the dramatic action. Kudiyattam's preservation is largely due to the efforts of families who have maintained its traditions, ensuring its continuity as a living art form.
