Kromatograafe

Kromatograafe are instruments used in chromatography, a laboratory technique for separating mixtures. These instruments employ a stationary phase and a mobile phase to achieve separation. The mobile phase, which can be a liquid or a gas, carries the sample mixture through the stationary phase, which is typically a solid or a liquid coated on a solid support. Different components of the mixture interact with the stationary phase to varying degrees. Those that interact more strongly with the stationary phase move slower, while those that interact less strongly move faster. This differential movement leads to the separation of the components.

There are several types of kromatograafe, each suited for different applications. Gas kromatograafe (GC) are used to separate volatile compounds, where the mobile phase is a gas. Liquid kromatograafe (LC), on the other hand, use a liquid mobile phase and are suitable for a wider range of compounds, including non-volatile ones. High-performance liquid kromatograafe (HPLC) are a more advanced form of LC, offering higher resolution and faster separation times. Other types include thin-layer kromatograafe (TLC) and ion-exchange kromatograafe. Kromatograafe are essential tools in analytical chemistry, used for identifying, quantifying, and purifying substances in fields such as pharmaceuticals, environmental monitoring, and food safety. The design and specific components of a kromatograaf vary depending on the chromatographic method it employs, but generally include a solvent/gas delivery system, an injector for the sample, a column containing the stationary phase, and a detector to monitor the separated components as they elute.
