Kromaationi

Kromaationi is a proposed perceptual process in color science that seeks to explain why perceived colors remain stable under changing illumination. It posits that the visual system continuously recalibrates chromatic information through rapid, context-sensitive neural weighting, producing perceptual constancy beyond what traditional chromatic adaptation accounts for.

The term derives from the Greek kromā, meaning color, and a suffix indicating a process, with the name appearing in contemporary color-appearance literature to distinguish this mechanism from standard adaptation.

The concept emerged from theoretical work in the 2000s and 2010s that integrated psychophysical data with Bayesian models of perception. It has been discussed as a potential additive mechanism to existing chromatic adaptation theories, offering an explanation for certain rapid color-appearance phenomena observed under dynamic lighting.

Mechanistically, kromaationi is imagined as a dynamic recalibration of cone-contrast gain and post-receptoral channel weights, guided by priors about daylight and typical illuminants. It would operate on fast timescales, from milliseconds to seconds, and would complement slower adaptation by updating hue estimates in the brain. Neurophysiological involvement is hypothesized in early color-processing areas such as V4 and in higher-order cortical regions implicated in perceptual decision-making.

Empirical support remains tentative. Some experiments report rapid color-appearance shifts under chromatic noise that are not fully captured by conventional adaptation models, while others attribute observed effects to existing adaptation, memory, or context effects. Neuroimaging findings are currently inconclusive.

If further substantiated, kromaationi could inform color appearance models used in display calibration, lighting design, and color-managed workflows by incorporating an additional mechanism for chromatic priors.
