KristianiaChristiania was the name of Oslo, Norway's capital city, during two distinct periods in its history.

The city was first named Kristiania in 1624 by King Christian IV of Denmark and Norway. This renaming occurred after a devastating fire had destroyed the medieval settlement of Oslo, and the king decided to rebuild the city on a new site, closer to Akershus Fortress. The new city was laid out in a grid pattern and named in honor of its royal founder. This name, Kristiania, persisted for over 300 years.

In 1925, the city's name was officially changed back to Oslo. This decision was a move to reclaim the city's older, more traditional name and to distance itself from the Danish influence that had been prominent during the period of union with Denmark. The change was widely supported and marked a significant moment in Norwegian national identity.

However, there was a brief period during World War II when the name Kristiania was reintroduced. Following the German invasion and occupation of Norway in 1940, the Nazi-aligned administration attempted to reassert Danish-sounding names and symbols. As part of this effort, they reverted the city's name back to Kristiania. This period was short-lived, and with the end of the occupation in 1945, the name Oslo was quickly restored and has remained the official name of the city ever since. The use of Kristiania today is largely historical, referring to specific eras or contexts.
