Krioprecipitat

Krioprecipitat refers to a precipitate that forms when blood plasma is cooled to 0-4 degrees Celsius (32-39 degrees Fahrenheit) for a period of time, typically 24 to 72 hours. This precipitate consists of proteins that are less soluble at reduced temperatures. The most common components of krioprecipitat include fibrinogen, factor VIII, and von Willebrand factor. Less frequently, immunoglobulins and other proteins can also be found.

The formation of krioprecipitat is a laboratory procedure often used in the diagnosis and management of certain bleeding disorders. It is a key step in the preparation of krioprecipitated antihemophilic factor (KHF), a blood product used to treat hemophilia A and von Willebrand disease. KHF is rich in fibrinogen and factor VIII, which are essential clotting factors that are deficient in these conditions.

The presence and quantity of specific proteins in krioprecipitat can provide diagnostic clues. For instance, abnormally high levels of fibrinogen in the precipitate might suggest a condition like reactive thrombocytosis. Conversely, a lack of expected components can indicate specific deficiencies. While useful clinically, krioprecipitate formation is a sensitive process, and improper handling or storage can affect its composition and efficacy.
