Kredi

Kredi is a Turkish term meaning credit or loan. It refers to money received from a lender that must be repaid, often with interest, and to the broader concept of available financing or a borrower’s access to funds.

The word is borrowed from European languages, most likely from the French word crédit or the Italian credito, and has been integrated into Turkish vocabulary since the late 19th or early 20th century. It appears in many compound terms such as kredi kartı (credit card), kredi limiti (credit limit), and kredi notu or kredi puanı (credit score).

In Turkey, kredi encompasses consumer loans, mortgages, vehicle loans, and lines of credit offered by banks and other financial institutions. Credit agreements specify terms of repayment, interest rates, fees, and collateral where required, and are governed by general contracting and financial regulations applicable to lending activities.

Across different contexts, kredi remains the standard Turkish term for credit, while in financial language it likewise translates to "credit" or "loan" in English.
