Krüptomünt, commonly known as cryptocurrency, refers to a type of digital or virtual currency that uses cryptography for security and operates independently of a central bank. Unlike traditional currencies issued by governments, cryptocurrencies rely on decentralized systems, often based on blockchain technology, to verify and record transactions. This decentralization is maintained through a network of computers, or nodes, that collectively validate and maintain the integrity of the transaction ledger.

The most well-known cryptocurrency is Bitcoin, created in 2009 by an anonymous person or group using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. Bitcoin introduced the concept of a peer-to-peer electronic cash system, allowing users to send and receive payments without intermediaries like banks. Since then, thousands of alternative cryptocurrencies, or "altcoins," have been developed, each with unique features and use cases, such as Ethereum, which supports smart contracts, or Ripple, designed for cross-border payments.

Cryptocurrencies operate using a technology called blockchain, a distributed ledger that records all transactions across a network of computers. This ledger is immutable, meaning once a transaction is recorded, it cannot be altered or deleted, ensuring transparency and security. Transactions are verified by network participants through a process called mining (for proof-of-work systems) or staking (for proof-of-stake systems), which requires solving complex mathematical problems or holding a stake of the cryptocurrency, respectively.

The appeal of cryptocurrencies lies in their potential for lower transaction fees, faster transfers, and greater financial inclusion, particularly in regions with unstable currencies or limited access to banking services. However, their volatility, regulatory uncertainty, and association with illicit activities have also raised concerns. Governments and financial institutions continue to explore how to integrate cryptocurrencies into the global financial system while addressing these challenges.
