Kovametallin

Kovametallin, also known as cemented carbide or hardmetal, is a composite material composed of a hard carbide phase embedded in a metal binder phase. Tungsten carbide (WC) is the most common carbide used, due to its exceptional hardness and wear resistance. Other carbides like titanium carbide (TiC) and tantalum carbide (TaC) are sometimes added to improve specific properties. The binder phase is typically cobalt (Co), which acts as a cement, holding the carbide particles together. Nickel (Ni) and molybdenum (Mo) can also be used as binders, offering different performance characteristics.

The production of kovametallin involves powder metallurgy. The carbide and binder powders are mixed, pressed into a desired shape, and then sintered at high temperatures. During sintering, the binder melts and infiltrates the carbide particles, forming a dense, strong material. The resulting properties of kovametallin can be tailored by adjusting the grain size of the carbide particles and the composition of the binder. Finer grain sizes generally lead to increased hardness and wear resistance, while a higher binder content typically results in greater toughness and ductility.

Kovametallin possesses a unique combination of high hardness, excellent wear resistance, good compressive strength, and moderate toughness. These properties make it suitable for a wide range of demanding applications. It is widely used in cutting tools for machining metals, ceramics, and composites, as well as in mining and construction tools for drilling and excavation. Other applications include wear parts, nozzles, and components subjected to high stress and abrasive environments. Its durability and performance under harsh conditions are key to its industrial importance.
