Kotiseutu

Kotiseutu is a Finnish term for one's home region or homeland, referring to the geographic area where a person has grown up, has family roots, or feels a strong sense of belonging. The notion covers the landscape, local history, culture, dialects, traditions, and social ties that link people to a place. The word is a compound of koti (home) and seutu (region or area).

In Finnish culture, kotiseutu is closely tied to local identity and heritage work. It is fostered by voluntary associations, local museums, schools, and community projects that document, preserve, and promote regional history and culture. A key element of the movement is the kotiseutumuseo, or local heritage museum, which collects artifacts and stories from the surrounding area.

Nationally, kotiseudun work is organized and supported by organizations such as Kotiseutuliitto, the Federation of Finnish Local Heritage Associations, which coordinates activities, training, and collaboration among local heritage groups and museums. The emphasis is on inclusive, participatory preservation of local culture and on making regional history accessible to residents and visitors alike.

The concept also informs education and regional development. By highlighting local resources, traditions, and landscapes, kotiseutu fosters community pride, supports tourism, and guides cultural policies and planning at municipal and regional levels. It remains a living expression of belonging to a specific place within Finland’s diverse regional tapestry.
