Kotaeru is a Japanese verb that translates to "to answer" or "to respond." It is commonly used in everyday conversation and writing to indicate a reaction to a question, request, or statement. The verb is derived from the auxiliary verb "eru," which signifies ability or possibility, combined with the verb "kotoba," meaning "word." This etymology suggests that "kotaeru" literally means to be able to provide words in response.
