Kosmosevõistlus, meaning "Space Race" in Estonian, refers to the historical period of intense competition between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, primarily focused on achieving milestones in space exploration. This rivalry, which spanned roughly from 1955 to 1975, was driven by a desire for technological and ideological supremacy, with each superpower seeking to demonstrate its superiority through advancements in rocketry, satellite technology, and human spaceflight.

The Soviet Union achieved several early victories, including the launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957, the first artificial satellite, and Yuri Gagarin's historic flight as the first human in space in 1961. These achievements spurred the United States to accelerate its own space program, notably through President John F. Kennedy's ambitious goal of landing a man on the Moon before the end of the 1960s. This culminated in the successful Apollo 11 mission in 1969, with Neil Armstrong becoming the first human to walk on the lunar surface.

Beyond the symbolic achievements, the Kosmosevõistlus fueled significant scientific and technological innovation. Developments in materials science, computing, and telecommunications were accelerated by the demands of the space race. While the competition was fierce, it also led to moments of cooperation, particularly in later years, as the shared challenges and costs of space exploration became more apparent. The official end of the Kosmosevõistlus is often marked by the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in 1975, a joint mission between the U.S. and Soviet Union, symbolizing a shift towards collaboration in space.
