Kortikosteroidilääke is a Finnish term referring to corticosteroid medication. These are synthetic drugs that mimic the action of hormones produced by the adrenal glands, specifically cortisol. They are widely used in medicine due to their potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties.

Corticosteroid medications are prescribed for a variety of conditions. These include inflammatory diseases such as asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease. They are also used to manage allergic reactions, skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, and certain autoimmune disorders. These can range from mild, such as increased appetite and mood changes, to more serious, particularly with long-term or high-dose use. Potential long-term side effects include weight gain, thinning of the skin, increased risk of infection, osteoporosis, and elevated blood sugar levels. Therefore, they are typically used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible duration. Medical supervision is crucial when using these medications.
