Korsmodulation

Korsmodulation is a phenomenon observed in certain types of electronic circuits, particularly in radio frequency (RF) mixers. It refers to the unwanted generation of a signal at the sum or difference frequency of two input signals, even when one of the input signals is intended to be absent or at a very low level. Essentially, it's a form of signal leakage or interference that can degrade the performance of RF systems.

This effect is often caused by nonlinearities within the mixer circuit. When strong signals are present, these nonlinearities can cause them to interact in unintended ways, producing spurious output frequencies. For example, in a superheterodyne receiver, if a strong local oscillator (LO) signal leaks through to the antenna, it can mix with a strong incoming radio frequency (RF) signal, creating an unwanted intermediate frequency (IF) signal that can mask the desired signal.

Mitigating korsmodulation typically involves careful circuit design. This can include employing mixer architectures that inherently suppress certain intermodulation products, using filtering to remove unwanted signals before they reach the mixer, or ensuring proper isolation between different signal paths. The presence and severity of korsmodulation are important considerations in the design of high-performance RF systems where signal purity and dynamic range are critical.
