Korroosiosuojalääkkeet, also known as corrosion inhibitors, are chemical substances that, when added in small concentrations to a corrosive environment, significantly reduce the rate of corrosion of a metal exposed to that environment. These substances work by forming a protective film on the metal surface, which acts as a barrier between the metal and the corrosive medium. This film can be formed through adsorption of the inhibitor molecules onto the metal surface, creating a physical barrier. Alternatively, some inhibitors can react with the metal surface to form a passive, less reactive layer.

The effectiveness of a corrosion inhibitor depends on several factors, including the type of metal, the nature of the corrosive environment (e.g., acidic, alkaline, presence of salts), temperature, and the concentration of the inhibitor. Common types of corrosion inhibitors include organic compounds containing heteroatoms like nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen, which can readily adsorb onto metal surfaces. Inorganic inhibitors, such as chromates and phosphates, are also widely used.

Corrosion inhibitors find extensive applications in various industries, including oil and gas, chemical processing, automotive, and construction. They are used in cooling water systems, boilers, pipelines, and in the formulation of protective coatings and lubricants. By preventing or slowing down corrosion, these substances help to extend the lifespan of metal components, reduce maintenance costs, and prevent potential failures.
