Koronærvenerne

Koronærvenerne is a Norwegian term that translates to "coronary veins" in English. These vessels are a crucial part of the cardiovascular system, responsible for returning deoxygenated blood from the heart muscle itself back to the right atrium of the heart.

The heart muscle, or myocardium, requires a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients to function. While the coronary arteries supply this oxygenated blood, the coronary veins collect the blood after it has passed through the capillaries of the myocardium. This deoxygenated blood is then channeled through a network of veins, the largest and most significant of which is the coronary sinus.

The coronary sinus collects blood from the great cardiac vein, the middle cardiac vein, and the small cardiac vein, among others. It then empties directly into the right atrium, where it mixes with the rest of the deoxygenated blood returning from the body. This venous return system is essential for maintaining the heart's own metabolic processes and ensuring efficient circulation throughout the body. Issues with the coronary venous system are less commonly discussed than those of the coronary arteries, but they can still have significant implications for heart health.
