Korkeakoululainsäädäntö
Korkeakoululaitos is a Finnish term that translates to "higher education institution." This broad category encompasses universities and universities of applied sciences in Finland. Universities, known as "yliopisto," are primarily research-oriented and offer academic degrees from bachelor's to doctoral levels. They focus on theoretical knowledge and scientific inquiry. Universities of applied sciences, or "ammattikorkeakoulu" (often abbreviated as AMK), are more professionally oriented. They provide practical, job-focused education and award degrees up to master's level. The Finnish higher education system is known for its high quality and accessibility. Both types of institutions are publicly funded, and tuition fees are generally not charged for EU/EEA students. The distinction between universities and universities of applied sciences is a key feature of Finland's approach to higher education, aiming to cater to both academic research and the needs of the labor market. Admission to these institutions is competitive and typically based on entrance examinations and previous academic records. Graduates from both sectors contribute to Finland's innovation and economic development.
