Korkeajännitelinjat, known in English as high-voltage power lines, are essential components of electricity transmission networks. They are designed to transport large amounts of electrical energy over long distances with minimal loss. This is achieved by stepping up the voltage to very high levels, typically in the range of tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of volts, before transmission.

The construction of these lines involves sturdy towers, often made of steel or concrete, which support thick conductors. Insulators, typically made of porcelain or composite materials, are crucial for preventing the high-voltage current from escaping to the towers and the ground. The voltage level chosen for transmission depends on the distance and the amount of power being carried. Higher voltages allow for lower currents, which in turn reduce energy loss due to the resistance of the conductors.

After traveling through the high-voltage transmission network, the electricity is stepped down to lower voltages at substations before being distributed to consumers. This process is vital for ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of electricity to homes, businesses, and industries. The visual presence of these lines is a common feature of many landscapes, and their planning and construction are subject to strict regulations to ensure public safety and environmental considerations.
