Korkeajännitekäytössä refers to the operational state or application of high voltage systems. High voltage is generally defined as a voltage level exceeding a specified threshold, which can vary depending on the context and region, but often starts around 1000 volts for alternating current (AC) and 1500 volts for direct current (DC). These systems are crucial for the efficient transmission and distribution of electrical power over long distances.

The primary purpose of using high voltage in power systems is to reduce energy losses during transmission. When electricity flows through conductors, a certain amount of energy is dissipated as heat due to electrical resistance. By increasing the voltage, the current can be decreased for the same amount of power (since power = voltage × current). Lower current means less energy loss in the transmission lines.

High voltage is typically generated at power plants using step-up transformers. It is then transmitted through a network of high-voltage power lines, often supported by large pylons. Before reaching consumers, the voltage is reduced in stages by step-down transformers at substations to levels suitable for industrial, commercial, and residential use.

Working with high voltage presents significant safety challenges. The high electrical potential can cause severe injury or death through electric shock, arc flashes, and explosions. Therefore, strict safety protocols, specialized equipment, and highly trained personnel are essential when dealing with high voltage systems. Maintenance, repair, and operation of these systems require extreme caution and adherence to established safety regulations to prevent accidents.
