Koolikalender

Koolikalender is the Estonian term for the school calendar, the timetable used to organize the academic year in schools. It provides the framework for when classes run, when terms start and end, and when holidays and examinations take place. The concept is shared with other languages as a formal component of educational administration.

The word itself is a compound of kool (school) and kalender (calendar). In practice, koolikalender is published by education authorities or individual schools and is used by students, parents, and teachers to plan attendance, coursework, and school events. The calendar may be produced for a single school year or set as an annual framework used with annual updates.

Common elements include the start and end dates of the school year and its terms, scheduled holidays (such as autumn and winter breaks), public holidays that reduce or shift school days, examination periods, and dates for parent-teacher meetings and school events. It may also specify teacher professional days and other non-attendance days. Some calendars provide a multi-year view to help families plan ahead.

Traditionally, school calendars were printed and posted at schools, but most institutions now publish them digitally. They are often available on school websites or education portals, and many offer downloadable calendar files that can be synced with personal digital calendars. While national or regional authorities may provide a framework, individual schools frequently tailor the exact dates within that framework.
