Konvergenzprüfungen are tests used in mathematics to determine whether an infinite series has a finite sum. This is a crucial concept in calculus and analysis, as many important functions and phenomena can be represented by infinite series. If a series converges, its terms must approach zero. However, this condition alone is not sufficient to guarantee convergence.

There are various tests available, each suited for different types of series. The most basic is the divergence test, which states that if the limit of the terms of a series is not zero, the series diverges. The integral test compares a series to an improper integral. For series with positive terms, the comparison test and limit comparison test can be used by comparing the series to another series whose convergence is already known. The ratio test and the root test are particularly useful for series involving factorials or exponential functions. For alternating series, the alternating series test provides a condition for convergence.

Understanding and applying these convergence tests allows mathematicians to determine the behavior of infinite sums and to perform calculations with them reliably. If a series does not converge, it is said to diverge, meaning its sum grows infinitely large or oscillates without settling on a specific value.
