Kontrolliratsut, often translated as "control horses" or "inspection horses," refers to a historical practice, particularly in cavalry and equestrian contexts, where a group of horses were used to ensure the quality and suitability of other horses for a specific purpose. This practice was most prevalent during periods when armies relied heavily on horse cavalry for military operations.

The primary function of kontrolliratsut was to act as a benchmark or standard against which other horses could be judged. These horses were typically of exceptional breeding, training, and physical condition. They were used in various stages of horse acquisition and assessment. For instance, when purchasing horses for military service, a group of kontrolliratsut might be paraded or ridden alongside potential recruits. Experienced cavalry officers or equestrians would then compare the horses being considered against the established standard set by the kontrolliratsut.
