Kontrastforbindelser are chemical compounds used to improve visualization in imaging techniques by altering the contrast between different tissues or fluids. They are designed to change how X-rays, magnetic fields or ultrasound interact with the body, enabling clearer differentiation of structures, lesions and functional processes.

The main categories include:

- Radiography and computed tomography (CT): iodinated contrast media, which increase X-ray attenuation and enhance vascular and tissue details. They are available in ionic and nonionic forms and in various osmolarities. Barium sulfate suspensions are used for gastrointestinal imaging and are not absorbed by the body.

- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs), which shorten T1 or T2 relaxation times to boost signal. GBCAs are further categorized by chemical stability (linear vs macrocyclic) and associated safety profiles. In patients with severe kidney impairment, there is a risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis, so kidney function is typically assessed before use.

- Ultrasound: microbubble contrast agents, gas-filled shells that enhance echogenicity and improve Doppler and perfusion studies. They are used in cardiac and abdominal imaging and have specific contraindications.

- Other and experimental tools: iron oxide nanoparticles and manganese-based agents have been explored as MRI contrasts; developments aim to improve safety, specificity and imaging capability.

Safety and administration vary by agent and modality. Potential risks include allergic reactions and, for iodinated contrasts, contrast-induced nephropathy; for GBCAs, risk of NSF in vulnerable patients. Proper patient assessment, dosing, hydration, and monitoring are standard practices. Regulatory approval and labeling guide approved indications, contraindications and usage, with imaging providers selecting agents based on clinical needs and patient factors.
