Each kontodelt represents a predefined portion of the account balance and can be allocated to different users, purposes, or projects while remaining part of a common ledger. The concept combines elements of sub-accounts, joint accounts, and budget envelopes, but is typically implemented within digital wallets or treasury management systems.

The word is a compound of konto (account) and del (part or share) in Norwegian and Danish, reflecting its function as a definable portion of an overall balance. In practice, kontodelt is used to enable granular control and visibility over how funds are used, without creating entirely separate bank accounts.

Mechanically, kontodelt is often implemented by tagging transactions or by enforcing rules at the application layer. Funds in a kontodelt may be earmarked for specific purposes, subject to dedicated spending limits, or restricted from certain types of transactions.
