Kontaktknotens

It serves as a framework for describing how entities interact through different kinds of contacts (for example physical proximity, communication, or shared spaces) over time, and for analyzing how these interactions intertwine to form complex connection patterns.

In its typical formalization, a Kontaktknoten (singular) is a substructure within a temporal multilayer network. The network comprises nodes representing actors or objects, layers corresponding to contact types, and time-ordered edges that record the sequence of interactions. A Kontaktknoten is characterized by a set of nodes, a sequence of edges across potentially several layers, and a temporal span during which the interactions occur. The “knot” metaphor reflects the intertwined, possibly cyclical, patterns that can emerge when different contact types and time steps are combined.

Applications of Kontaktknotens include the study of transmission dynamics in epidemiology, where knot structures help identify potential transmission pathways, and in social sciences to understand how information or behaviors propagate through overlapping networks.
